The granddaughter of Richard Sheridan, Norton (1808-87) was a poet and playwright. She wrote several pamphlets on the property and custody rights of women is response to her divorce experiences. She was influential in the passage of the Infant Custody Bill of 1839 and later the over-haul of the divorce and property laws. This long narrative poem tells the story of a "French countess, injured in a hunting accident, who builds and works in a hospital for the poor. Based on a true story."
