Carlyle (1801-1866) married Thomas Carlyle in 1826 and had been a writer from a very early age. "Insulating Carlyle from the daily activities of the world occupied much of Jane Carlyle's time, and these efforts form the subject of many of her letters." She bore the stress of living with Carlyle and never published the novel that was urged on her.
