Lloyd was a social reformer in the late 19th century. As financial editor of the Chicago Tribune, he warned of the rise of monopolies and an oligarchy of capitalists. He was intensely active in the labor movement; his best-known book was " Wealth Against Commonwealth, published in 1894. Although the house is large and rather palatial by contemporary standards, it was a haven for people from all walks of life, and Jane Addams refered to Wayside as "an annex to Hull House."
