Appleton taught in Baltmore, MD, and Cincinnati before starting her own school in Cincinnati in 1855, which continued until 1875. After the close of the school she gave annual literary lectures (here reprinted) including these on Alexander Pope, The Novel in the 18th Century, The Trollope Family, Two French Female Novelists, etc.
