A justice's court is a local, limited-jurisdiction trial court—often called the "people's court"—that handles minor civil lawsuits, misdemeanor criminal offenses, and traffic violations. These courts are typically established at the county or municipal level and are presided over by a judge known as a justice of the peace (JP). In many jurisdictions, a justice of the peace is not required to have a formal law degree.
