Hogg (1770-1835). the "Ettrick Shepherd" was born on the banks of the Ettrick River in Scotland. Following the life of a shepherd, his early works were commended by Scott. He made his reputation with "The Queen's Wake" (1813). Bleiler notes: "one of the great classics of supernatural fiction [and] perhaps the finest English supernatural novel of its century"
