The first volume of this two volume set was issued in 1895. In this controversial work, Stanton demanded equality for women. This commentary "analyzed the Bible's derogatory references to women and reinterpreted them in the light of other passages as well as of reason and common sense. The work sold well but it aroused a storm of protest from the clergy, the press and even from many of Mrs. Stanton's suffrage colleagues, who, led by Anna Howard Shaw, Rachel Foster Avery, Carrie Chapman Catt and other younger women of the movement, in the 1896 convention adopted a resolution dissociating the suffrage association from The Woman's Bible."
