The publisher's advertisement notes that this edition has been enlarged, with a new essay of the reign and character of Charles II. Also, the portraits have been, for the most part, re-engraved. Jameson (1794-1860) was born in Dublin and raised in England. She was deeply concerned with the educational and legal situation of women and her many friends included Catherine Maria Sedgwick, George Eliot, Harriet Martineau, etc. In later life she supported younger reformers like Emily Faithful and Adelaide Procter.
