The society advocated the return of Blacks to Africa and helped settle Liberia. The African Repository was first issued in 1825 and continued until 1892, when its name was changed to Liberia. It was edited by Ralph Randolph Gurley. The American Colonialization Society labored to return free African-Americans to Liberia and worked to suppress the slave trade. The society transported 6000 people between 1821 and 1867.
