Aresty, The Best Behavior (1970) notes that Terhune, wife of a prominent clergyman, was a well established author of more than 25 books and was a widely read authority on household and family management. Terhue understood her task as one of raising the women of rude upbringing to be able to function within society. She is widely known for her chapter Mrs. Newlyrich and her Social Duties.
