Spear (1803- 1863) wrote critically of capital punishment, which he said was a usurpation of divine power. In 1845 he was appointed General Secretary of the Massachusetts Society for the Abolition of Capital Punishment. There is also an index showing which crimes are punishable by death in each state in the Union.
