Morgan (1776 - 1859), the first financially successful woman writer "was a celebrated social, literary and political figure for half a century."[Schleuter p. 356]. A number of her works were popular Irish political novels. Blain calls this "a fascinating historical quest (covering the Bible, Asian and African sources) for the deeds of `this dupe of fictions and subject of force', concludes that her role is on of `spiritual and affectionate activity'. " Schleuter calls it "a critique of the treatment of women from barbaric times to the Middle Ages and a plea for women's rights."
