Presented on the endpaper: "Hon. William D. Kelley | With the compliments | Wm E. Ringwalt | April 2nd/ 84." From the library of consumer advocate Florence Kelley. This was presented to her father, Judge and Congressman. The preface notes that Kelley was present when the paper was read and that a J.L. Ringwalt was as well. FK. Item #49956

Henry Charles Carey (1793 – 1879) was a leading 19th century economist of the American School of capitalism. He is now best known for the book The Harmony of Interests, to compare and contrast what he called the "British System" of laissez faire free trade capitalism with the "American System" of developmental capitalism, through tariff protection and government intervention to encourage production. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1793 and was a chief economic advisor to Abraham Lincoln during his presidency. Includes a list of Carey's numerous publications on economics.
