THE MEXICAN GUIDE; With three maps I. The Republic of Mexico II. The City of Mexico III. Environs of the City of Mexico.

NY: Scribner's Sons, 1900. This seems to be a reprint of the fourth edition on 1889. Small 8vo, pp. 531. Bound in flexible green cloth, stamped in gilt. A very good copy. Not in BAL which lists the first 4 editions of 1886, 1887, 1888, 1889. This edition was revised to reflect the new rail services that were springing up in Mexico under Diaz' regime; in fact, after p. 362 appears a page with the note "In order to facilitate necessary future extension, incident to the rapid growth of railways in Mexico, a gap of seven pages here is provided in the plates":. Item #49869

Janvier (1849 - 1913), American by birth, lived for 7 years in Mexico, on his brother's coffee plantation in Vera Cruz state, but travelled around extensively. He was the author of a popular "lost race" novel called Aztec Treasure House, as well as a collection of tales -- ghost stories really -- about Mexico City, called Legends of the City of Mexico.
