Findley (1750-1821) came to America in 1763 and later served in the Revolution. After the Revolution he settled near Latrobe, Pa., and became an active anti-Federalist. He also helped settle the Whiskey Insurrection of 1794. Later he served in the Pennsylvania Senate from 1799-1803 and in the U.S. House from 1791 until 1799 and from 1803 to 1817. He was a strong supporter of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. He argued in“The Two Sons of Oil” that it was neither the purpose nor the design of the United States government to have a federal religion and a federal creed but rather to create the political conditions in which religious liberty could be enjoyed by all.
