Eugenia Stanhope (1730-86) is best remembered for her publication of Lord Chesterfield's letters to his son(see above). The letters were supposed to be private and Eugenia was attacked for being greedy and immoral. The present work, "partly endorses, partly rebuts Chesterfield. It argues that husbands are ordained superior, that wives should be financially dependent and the world conformed to. [Blain]. She no longer defends extra maritial sex, but does call for freedom of marriage choice.
