Berthollet was most noted for applying the [then] newly- discovered oxygenated muriatic acid to vegetable colors for the purpose of bleaching. The revolutionary results of Berthollet's experiments, conducted in collaboration with his son, A. B. Berthollet, were first published in 1791, in their "Elemens de l'Art de la Teinture." In 1809,The Scottish chemist Andrew Ure translated this second edition, adding his own notes & additional illustrative plates. Ure's edition includes details of the newest research on dyeing & dyestuffs, particularly the discoveries of J. B. Vitalis which appeared in his "Cours Elementaire de Teinture" [Paris, 1823]. In addition, the plates Ure includes depict some of the newest machinery used in the active English dyeing establishments of the period. Ure also included a table for converting French weights & measures into the English equivalents.
