Thomas was born in Essen, Germany, showed talent for the violin very early and became a child prodigy. The family emigrated to America while Thomas was stil a boy; and he helped to support it by playing wherever he could, in the theater and in bars. Eventually he became a conductor, and was, to a great extent, responsible for the growth of the symphony orchestra in the U.S.
