Known at an early age for her beauty, she was "of lovely and easy manners, of a poetical fabric of mind, with some wit and not too high a degree of refinement or delicacy." (Robert Chambers in Works of Robert Burns). In 1776 she married James McLehose, a Glasgow lawyer, and they separated four years later. She met Burns in Dec 1787. They continued a voluminous correspondence.
