A biography of the prolific writer, Ricarda Huch (1864-1947), written by a friend of over 50 years. Huch, a poet, novelist, historian, biographer, and dramatist, was born and raised in Braunschweig in a literary family. She studied history, philosophy and philology at Zurich (at the time she would not have been allowed to pursue those studies in Germany.) Married twice, she lived in Zurich, in Triest, Austria, and in Berlin. In 1931 she was awarded the Goethe Prize from the city of Frankfurt. In 1933, in protest against the "realm of satan" she left the Prussian Academy of Arts. She refused to support the Nazi's persecution of the Jews and in 1936 she moved to Jena. On Nov. 17 1947 she died in Schonberg. Two of her most important works are Der Grosse Krieg in Deutschland (1912-14) and Die Romantik (1908).
