One of Parrish's most famous illustrated books and one of the century's most cherished children's books. Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) was the son of the noted artist and etcher Stephen Parrish. He studied first at Haverford College, and in 1892 he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He also audited Howard Pyle's first classes in illustration at Drexel Institute. Parrish was one of the first artist's to take advantage of the new possibilities of process color printing, and is today recognized as one of the towering American figures in the golden age of book illustration. Although his book and magazine illustrations provided him with an enormous public following, his prints and calendars made him even more famous.
