This is a description of the politics, economics and demographics of the English colonies in North America. The second volume is a reprint of Raynal's book on the American Revolution (first published in 1781). Raynal is sympathetic to the revolting colonies and criticizes the policy of the British government.
A French historical and political writer, Raynal (1711-1796) was educated as a Jesuit before breaking with the order and becoming curate of St. Suplice in Paris. Rose suggests that this was a work "written in a liberal strain, but without much depth or accuracy. Its mistakes were exposed in a pamplet by Thomas Paine" (Lettre Adressee A L'Abbe Raynal, 1782).
