Kaye-Smith (1887-1956), poet and novelist, wrote a number of autobiographical books and 31 works of fiction. A convert, with her husband, to Roman Catholicism, she lived in London for a time, and then the couple became farmers in Sussex. Her best-known novels deal with the lives of farm people and with religion. Susan Spray "tracks its protagonists's increasing self-deception." (Blain 599).
