Lehmann (1901-1990) was the daughter of an American mother and an MP father. "Her fiction, often called "female" is notable for insight into the inner lives of women and children, the dynamics of the family and social class and the often destructive feelings of sexual feeling, and for narrative abd chronological complexity, unobtrusive symbolism and rich but economical prose style" [Blain p. 646]. She was an intimate of C. Day Lewis and had her Letter to a Sister published by the Woolf's Hogarth Press.
