Tapping Reeve (1744-1823) was a jurist and law professor. A graduate of Princeton University, he was admitted to the Connecticut Bar in 1772 and settled in Litchfield. In 1784, he opened the Litchfield Law School, which, with the exception of the department of Law at William and Mary was the first law school in the US. He was appointed a judge in 1784 and chief justice of the Supreme Court of Errors in CT in 1814. This is the first book in the US to outline the rights of women and family law.
