Ward (1844-1911) wrote numerous books and articles advocating woman's rights, suffrage, and dress reform. She was the daughter of author Elizabeth Wooster Phelps (1815-52), a novelist who died when the novelst was 8. She was heavily influenced by her mother who described the dual nature of the life of women.
