Born in Portland, ME., Parton (1811!72) was educated at Catherine Beecher's seminary and later wrote for The Mother's Assistant. The articles were collected into the present volume, which was a runaway best seller. A second volume appeared in 1854 and Parton was offered a weekly column in the New York Ledger, making her the nation's leading woman columnist. Blain notes that her work was critical of conventional religion and that she focused on woman's issues.
