Lady Russell (1636-1723) the daughter of an Earl and widow of Lord Vaughan married William Russell in 1678. She used her position to advance Whig values and to support her husband who was beheaded for his alleged involvement in the Rye House Plot in 1683. She, however, was able to retain her influence in political circles.
